Last night, as we were sitting in bed, some close personal friends of ours messaged asking if we were watching Celebrity Big Brother as it was a bit of cheesy television they loved to watch. We haven’t been big fans of the show since it left Channel 4 if I’m completely honest, so we chose not to turn it on, and thank goodness we didn’t.
5 or 10 minutes later, we receive another message, telling us not to watch and how disgusted they were by what they had just witnessed.
Upon entrance to the house the former UKIP representative, Winston McKenzie stated that ‘I could cope with a homosexual in the house – I guess I’ll just have to and with my back against a brick wall all the time” which was included in his housemates VT before he even entered the house! So this wasn’t even a piece of Live footage that they forgot to edit out, it was allowed on the programme by the producers and editors of Channel 5 and Big Brother, which in this day and age disgusts me beyond belief.
If his words were intended as a racial slur, would it have been allowed to air on the show? The answer is absolutely not, so why do they not hold homophobia to the same standard?! In this day and age, homophobia is just as hurtful and soul destroying as racism and this programme should be held accountable for their actions.
No I didn’t watch the programme, no I didn’t hear the comments live but it still hurts, no matter what. I think of all those impressionable young viewers who may be having trouble coming to terms with their own sexuality and hearing these words. It doesn’t help them. All Big Brother wanted to do was cause a media riot to promote the show, not thinking of the emotional damage it inflicts upon its viewers.
I may seem like a mad, ranting woman but I’m just so saddened by this and I hope they pull Winston McKenzie off the show and make a public apology to everyone who was offended. You don’t have to be part of the LGBT community to find his words offensive.
